Anthony Earnshaw Blue Plaque
Philip has recently submitted an application to Leeds Civic Trust to mount a Blue Plaque in Regent St, Chapel Allerton, Leeds, to honour the artist Anthony Earnshaw who has been described as an 'English Surrealist'.
Beginning his life working in engineering, he created art work in his spare time, whilst developing an appreciative following in the local arts establishment and he eventually obtained a fellowship at Leeds Polytechnic from 1972 to 1985 where he continued to develop his practice as an ‘English Surrealist’ and worked with assemblages, paintings, drawings and illustration.
His work has been shown throughout the UK as well as in the United States
so it would be true to state that he was an artist of international repute.
Anthony was an established artist at the time of his death in 2001 and had a very strong regional as well as national reputation. He has a permanent exhibition at Dean Clough galleries in Halifax and there is also currently the Anthony Earnshaw Bursary at Leeds Art University, established by his friend, fellow artist Patrick Hughes.
The flat where Anthony lived in Regent St has now been absorbed into Deliziosa, a local restaurant, where an example of his work – donated by his wife Gail Earnshaw - is on display.
